About the Presentation

In an interview with Johnny Holland this year, Jesse James Garrett spoke about the need for experience frameworks: “We need to be able to talk, as a professional community, about what differentiates successful experience design from unsuccessful (or absent) experience design. In order to do that we need frameworks for thinking about experience, describing it’s qualities, and evaluating it.”

Throughout the past few years, many frameworks have emerged in the field of user experience, but few appear as the topic of debate and there’s little public evidence that these frameworks are effectively being used as tools for experience design.

Crystal will also introduce several user experience frameworks she’s uncovered from the industry and facilitate a discussion on the usefulness of them as experience design tools.

You will also see examples of how she used one of these frameworks — The Experience Cycle by Hugh Dubberly and Shelley Evenson — was used as a tool to support framing, communicating and evaluating experience design.

About the Presentation

“The Design Gap” — Why Design Matters and Why it Should be Used to Solve More Problems with Jon Deutsch
Design is one of the most underutilized disciplines in business, yet it is one of the most effective ways to create a differentiation in most any aspect of an organization. This presentation will discuss the multiple facets of design, look at case studies where design-centric thinking enabled breakthrough solutions, and offer models for using design in more areas of business.

About Jon Deutsch

Principal & Senior Strategist, Capital D Design

As Principal and Chief Strategist of Capital D Design, Jonathan Deutsch is responsible for the foundational principles that enable CapD’s design-centric approach to innovation, problem solving and user experience. He applies this thinking to problems ranging from brand & messaging to usability & technology, to organizations & leadership.

Jonathan began his career in information technologies, and quickly transitioned into information system design & planning, interactive/web program management, and eventually global interactive strategy and brand communications & design.

Jonathan has a bachelors degree in Computer Science from the University of Delaware, and a Masters of Science in Organizational Dynamics from the University of Pennsylvania. It was through his master’s program at Penn where Jonathan developed and honed the concept of Capital D Design, and developed the “Design Gap” methodology.
