About Presentation

The Design Age Or A young designer’s primer on maximizing value for lean and agile teams.

Design is all about value. It helps transfer value from one person to another. Design insures you have an experience: that at the end, you’re different than when you started. Design makes this difference, and like Babbage’s Difference Engine of yore, specific knobs and levers control how much value you can create with design.

In this presentation, we’ll learn how five levers — models, fidelity, audience, annotation, and velocity — work together. We’ll see how agile, lean, and waterfall teams apply these levers differently at different times to create different value from design.

Friday at work, you won’t be able to stop yourself from asking five, simple questions. You’ll be maximizing design value for every project you encounter.

About the Presenter

Austin Govella is an Experience Design Manager with Avanade where he’s helping re-invent how large enterprises collaborate. Prior to Avanade, Austin worked for Comcast Interactive Media where he contributed to early versions of Comcast Xfinity. In 2009, he co-authored the second edition of Information Architecture: Blueprints for the web with Christina Wodtke for New Riders/Peachpit, and he’s spent the last few years studying how agile teams, lean companies, and user experience designers can work better together.

About the Presentation

Our job is to be professional communicators. We communicate our thought process through our deliverables, we work to get buy-in for our solutions, we advocate for the end-user, and often act as the translator between the end-user, the business, and development. The biggest challenge that we face as professionals is that our communication is not always effective.

When communication breaks down, confusion and resistance emerge. You suddenly find yourself feeling frustrated, not heard or valued. The key is to set yourself up for success by explicitly designing your relationships with clients, stakeholders, managers, and co-workers. Regardless of your role – be it consultant, agency, or in-house – good working relationships are vital to your success.

The purpose of designing the relationship is to:

  • Establish an alliance
  • Create a safe space for communication to occur
  • Gain mutual trust
  • Empower each other and understand how best to work together

In this talk, I will present invaluable exercises, scripts, and questions that you can use to:

  • Identify your core values so that you are able to communicate your needs to others and request the same in return
  • Vet the next job or project to make sure that its the right fit for you
  • Design a relationship with every person on your team – from manager to co-worker – to ensure that you are empowered to do your job and set yourself up for success.

PhillyCHI Call for 2013 Officers and Volunteers

It’s that time of year again! PhillyCHI election time and call for volunteers. Being an officer of PhillyCHI is rewarding as it allows you the opportunity to foster the UX community in Philadelphia while increasing your visibility to the community at large.

As is the custom every year, all four Officer positions are open for nominations. If you are interested or know someone who would do a great job and may want to get involved, we want to hear from you. Help us keep up our great momentum. Nominate yourself or someone you know.

Voting Requirements

The election form will be posted to our membership channels, which include our Yahoo! group and our LinkedIn group. To vote in the election, you must be a PhillyCHI member and have access to these groups. If you’re not currently a member but you would like to vote in our upcoming election, you can join by filling out our brief membership form: http://phillychi.acm.org/?page_id=119 (There is currently no fee or charge for PhillyCHI membership.)

Positions Available

You are welcome to run for any of the four officer positions.

Chair

  • The principal officer responsible for leading and setting the direction of PhillyCHI.
  • Manages activities in accordance with the policies and procedures of the ACM and its by-laws.
  • Presides at all meetings of the Chapter

Vice Chair

  • Presides at meetings in the absence of the Chair
  • Assists the Chair in management of the Chapter
  • Performs other duties that may be assigned by the Chair

Secretary

  • Maintains records of Chapters activities and communications.
  • Responsible for all print and electronic communication of Chapter meetings and announcements.
  • Assists in coordination of meetings and events at direction of Chair or Vice Chair.
  • Manages and maintains PhillyCHI website, LinkedIn group, email list, members list, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Chair or Vice Chair

Treasurer

  • Prepares and submits the annual report to the ACM.
  • Collects all dues, sponsorship fees, pays bills and maintains Chapter’s overall financial records.
  • Completes and submit the Annual Financial Report to ACM Headquarters
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chair or Vice Chair

Note: To hold an officer position, you must be an ACM SIGCHI member and an ACM member; however, membership is not needed until the start of the 2013 term. All new officers will have the full support of retiring officers throughout the upcoming year,

About the Presentations

Dom LaCava: Financial organizations have turned to mobile technology to efficiently foster better relationships customers in efficient ways. Specifically, the Vanguard Group has built a website, a mobile site, and iPhone, Android, and iPad apps. However maintaining these sites and apps has introduced higher costs and inefficiencies. Additionally, as Vanguard expands into new international markets, it faces the challenge of making its brand recognizable and desirable while making its products accessible. Although it is armed with proven methods of promoting its brand, Vanguard has the opportunity to maximize its potential to increase brand awareness, to provide access to information, and to reduce maintenance by building a responsive website.

In this presentation, Dom provides practical, non-technical examples of planning for and designing a responsive website providing attendees with an understanding of how to plan for the challenges of achieving business goals while keeping focused on client goals.

Matt Ventre: Join Matt as he takes you through the trials and triumphs of pitching, planning, and producing an entire product experience in the investor relations sector. You’ll learn about things like why it’s especially important to prototype early and often, how to get stakeholders to buy into empathy-driven design, and hitting that sweet spot in between “too many” and “just enough” artifacts.
